Once England's largest county, Yorkshire was divided into several administrative entities (e.g. North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, Humberside etc) in the political reorganisation of local government of the 1970s. Nevertheless, the region of the North of England which comprises the old areas of the former North, West and East Ridings will always be known to its loyal residents as "Yorkshire" - whatever new boundaries are imposed by the powers-that-be.

Just like its inland scenery (which includes the wild heather moors of Bronte Country and the lush limestone scenery and windswept fells of the Yorkshire Dales), the region of England which is known as Yorkshire has a coastline which is frequently spectacular, varied, and interesting.

The Yorkshire Wolds are a series of gently undulating hills and valleys south of the North York Moors and east of the Vale of York which stretch in a broad arc from the city of Hull and the market town of Beverley to the coastal resorts of Filey and Bridlington on the Yorkshire Coast.

To the north and east of the ancient walled City of York the North York Moors Cover a broad area stretching from the Vale of York and the Vale of Mowbray across to the Yorkshire Coast. A large part of this area has been designated as one of England's national parks.

The Vale of York and the Vale of Mowbray is a broad plain lying between the fells of the Yorkshire Dales to the west and the hills of the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Wolds to the east. Several of Yorkshire's largest rivers converge in the plain, including the Swale, the Ure, the Nidd and the Wharfe - the result being the navigable Ouse.

The Yorkshire Dales is an area of great natural beauty in northern England, a large part of which has been designated as one of England and Wales' protected national parks. [N.B. Please note that due to political boundary changes some areas of the "classical" Yorkshire Dales actually lie outside of the regions which now officially constitute "Yorkshire".

The town of Whitby is a fishing port on the North Eastern Yorkshire coast. Famous for its associations with Captain Cook as well as Bram Stoker's "Dracula", Whitby is a popular destination for tourists visiting the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Coast.

Welcome to Bronte Country, an area which straddles the West Yorkshire and East Lancashire Pennines in the North of England. A windswept land of heather and wild moors, it is hardly surprising that this region became the inspiration for the classic works of the Bronte sisters, Charlotte, Emily and Anne.
